Understanding HCM in Sphynx Cats

What is HCM?

Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM) is the most common heart disease in cats. It causes the walls of the heart’s left ventricle to thicken, making it harder for the heart to pump blood efficiently. Over time, this can lead to heart failure, blood clots, or sudden death.

Why Are Sphynx Cats at Risk?

Sphynx cats are genetically predisposed to HCM. While the disease can affect any cat breed, it has a higher prevalence in Sphynx cats due to inherited traits. Breeding without regular heart screening can unknowingly pass the disease on.

Symptoms to Watch For:

HCM can progress silently. However, signs may include:

  • Rapid or open-mouth breathing

  • Lethargy or weakness

  • Loss of appetite

  • Coughing (less common in cats)

  • Sudden collapse or death

Many cats show no outward symptoms until the disease is advanced.

Diagnosis

The gold standard for diagnosing HCM is a cardiac ultrasound (echocardiogram) performed by a veterinary cardiologist. Annual screenings are highly recommended, especially for breeding cats.

Can HCM Be Cured?

There is no cure for HCM, but it can often be managed with medication and monitoring. Treatment focuses on reducing symptoms and improving quality of life. Cats with mild to moderate cases can live for years with proper care.

In the past there has been no cure but there is promising studies being undertaken with the use of Rapamycin. (sorry I cant get a shorter link)

Responsible Breeding and Prevention

  • Only breed Sphynx cats that have been scanned clear of HCM by a board-certified cardiologist.

  • Cats should be re-checked annually, as HCM can develop later in life.

  • Always ask for proof of negative HCM scans when adopting or purchasing a Sphynx cat.

What You Can Do:

  • Schedule regular heart scans for your Sphynx cat.

  • Choose reputable breeders who screen for HCM.

  • Monitor your cat for signs of heart issues.

  • Keep up with vet visits and discuss heart health during exams.

  • Sempre Sphynx organises discounted HCM scanning clinics yearly, these are now normally held around Oct.
